Holsey Scranton Scriptus Lee (a name like that is worth mentioning) was a submarine pitcher during the twenties and thirties. His diverse arsenal of pitches enabled one of his early teams, the Hilldale Daisies, to capture three Eastern Colored League Championships from 1923-25, and a World Series victory over the Kansas City Monarchs in 1925. Lee was also a reliable bunter and excelled at squeeze plays to help earn his keep at the plate.
Before baseball, Scrip Lee had a decorated military career by the age of twenty. He joined the National Guard at seventeen, and with General Pershing’s outfit, went to the Mexican border to quell Pancho Villa’s uprising. Then, as part of the 372nd Infantry attached to the 157th French Brigade, Lee earned two Battle Stars and a Purple Heart in WWI.
